Santa Catalina Island Harbor and Salina

Map     Satellite

There are several features of interest in this area, including the small salt marsh at the base of Ballast Point which has the richest coastal salt-flat succulent community on the island.  Species include Amblyopappus pusillus, Atriplex leucophylla, non-native Atriplex semibaccata, Atriplex watsonii, Salicornia subterminalis, Salicornia virginica, Suaeda californica, Spergularia macrotheca, Frankenia grandifolia, Distichlis spicata var. stolonifera, non-native Parapholis incurva, Jaumea carnosa and Monanthochloe littoralis.  This the only place on the island that the Monanthochloe occurs

The surf grass Phyllospadix torreyi is found in the harbor near Ballast Point.  Eel grass, Zostera marina, grows in about 6 meters (20 feet) of water along the eastern side of the harbor.

Near the harbor entrance on the bluffs is found the island endemic Phacelia lyonii.

See Avalon Canyon, Ben Weston Beach, and Bird and Indian Rocks.

Use:  Most of the water area in the vicinity of Pin Rock, from the shore out approximately 90 meters (300 feet), is leased to the Catalina Marine Science Center of the University of Southern California.
