Snow Melt Gullies - Islip to Dawson Saddles

Map     Satellite

Along the Angeles Crest Highway between Islip Saddle and the Lodgepole Picnic Area are a number of snow-melt gullies on the north and northwest-facing slopes. These gullies include various springs, among them Cortelyou, Windy, Little Jimmy and Lily.  The primary plant community is a coniferous forest with white fir, Abies concolor, lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta ssp. murrayana, and some Jeffrey pine, Pinus jeffreyi. Carex jonesii, Carex heteroneura and Carex rossii are restricted to these gullies.

A number of unusual subalpine species are also found here, including Veratrum californicum, Lilium parryi, Juncus mertensianus var. duranii, Potentilla glandulosa, Mimulus floribundus, Trifolium monanthum, Agrostis idahoensis, Dodecatheon redolens, Draba stenoloba, Platanthera sparsiflora, Platanthera leucostachys, Trisetum spicatum and Datisca glomerata.  Two rare plants are found nearby, Eriogonum umbellatum var. minus and the parasitic Orobanche valida.

Integrity:  Aside from the road, much of the area, except the picnic grounds, is virtually undisturbed.

Use:  Research, educational, observational.
