Solstice Canyon

Map     Satellite

A long, coastal canyon, Solstice supports a fine example of the vegetation of the region.  All but some ten percent of the area is covered in almost equal proportions by coastal sage scrub, with black sage, Salvia mellifera, the dominant, or by chaparral, with chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, and Ceanothus spinosus prominent.

Along the canyon's lower slopes and bottom there is a riparian association with white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, which is particularly well developed here, California bay, Umbellularia californica, sycamore, Platanus racemosa, and, in the understory, Woodwardia fimbriata.  Coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, also occurs here.

Animals are typical of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Rocks exposed in the area include Paleocene, Eocene and Miocene marine sedimentaries, as well as Miocene volcanics.

Integrity:  There are several houses and roads, but most of the area is virtually undisturbed.

Use:  Private
