Bishop Pine Preserve

Map     Satellite

This preserve lies on the northeast slope of the Inverness Ridge adjacent to the Point Reyes National Seashore.

Most of the area is covered by a mixed evergreen forest, with Bishop pine, Pinus muricata, generally dominant and occasionally occurring in almost pure stands. Other members of the canopy include tan-bark oak, Lithocarpus densiflorus, madrone, Arbutus menziesii, Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, chinquapin, Chrysolepis chrysophylla, coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, and California bay, Umbellularia californica. There are some pure stands of the bay.

Salal, Gaultheria shallon, huckleberry, Vaccinium ovatum, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus and Arctostaphylos glandulosa ssp. glandulosa are the main components of the understory. There is a small amount of northern coastal scrub, with Baccharis pilularis dominant.

Ledum glandulosum and the rare Ceanothus gloriosus var. porrectus occur here. A total of 160 plant species have been found on the preserve.

Animals are typical of the region.

Integrity: There are several buildings and access roads on the preserve; however, most of the vegetation is undisturbed.

Use: Private
