Map Satellite Over 100 years old, Lagunitas Lake has developed as close to a natural lacustrine community as will be found in the County, save for several small lakes in the Point Reyes National Seashore. The bird populations are the prime interest in this area, particularly the wintering waterfowl. Wood duck, Aix sponsa, common goldeneye, Bucephala clangula, and the uncommon Barrow's goldeneye, Bucephala islandica, are frequent winter visitors. The pileated woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus, nests in the vicinity upon occasion. A madrone, Arbutus menziesii, with a diameter of over 3 meters (10 feet), grows nearby. Integrity: Built in 1872, this is Marin's oldest artificial lake. The shores are cleared of brush and there is a picnic area. Use: Research, educational, observational, present. February 1978
