Saint Hilary's Wildflower Preserve

Map     Satellite

This grassland area contains a remarkably rich flora, with over 200 species of herbaceous plants found here.

Several are known only from this and the immediate vicinity, the black jewel flower, Streptanthus niger, and Tiburon Indian paint brush, Castilleja affinis ssp. neglecta.

The rare flax, Hesperolinon congestum, is known only from this locality and one in San Mateo, and the rare reed grass, Calamagrostis ophitidis, is found here and at several other sites to the north. Here, too, is the only known North Coast Range site of the wild onion, Allium lacunosum.

The area is primarily on serpentine.

Integrity: Owned by the Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society, the area is protected as a wild-flower preserve. An historic landmark, Old Saint Hilary's Church, stands on the property. There is an abandoned road and a few trails.

Use: Observation. The Belvedere-Tiburon Landmarks Society, as owner, makes the area accessible to the public.
