Chowchilla Mountain Area

Map     Satellite

This area, a portion of the sharp, rocky ridgetop of Chowchilla Mountain east of Devil Gulch, supports a variety of rare plants. The cover is mixed conifer forest with Jeffrey pine, Pinus ,jeffreyi, dominating the ridge. Rare species include Allium yosemitense, Eriogonum siskiyouense, Lewisia congdonii, and Phacelia vallicola. The Lewisia, which is confined to a few widely distributed populations in Fresno and Mariposa Counties, is abundant over a sizeable portion of the area.

Integrity: Portions of the area were logged in 1928-29. Though cattle graze in nearby meadows, the steep, rocky slopes serve as a barrier to them.

Use: Research, education.
