Merced Falls Lichen Fields

In various localities throughout the foothills of the Sierra there are lush lichen fields. This area, with a gently sloping terrain bisected by an intermittent stream, supports several score of species and is one of the more colorful and one of the richest in the foothills.

The vegetation is primarily grasslands, with a few scattered oak, Quercus spp. The lichens occur primarily on the excellent outcrop of tombstone rocks in the area.

Integrity: The area is grazed, and there are several fences and a powerline traversing the area.
