Map Satellite Located on a steep north-facing slope bounded by the Merced River, this area contains an excellent stand of canyon live oak, Quercus chrysolepis. Most of the trees are between 80 and 90 years of age and range upwards of 12 meters (40 feet) high, with a dbh of 50 centimeters (20 inches). Other species, primarily near the river, include incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens, Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa. The soils, derived from the Mesozoic granitics of the area, are thin and poorly consolidated. The slope is quite rocky. Integrity: No significant influences have been present which would alter the forest since 1958. Fire has been suppressed here for the past 40 - 50 years. Use: Research, educational. July 1976
