Map Satellite Lying on the divide separating the Tuolumne and Merced Rivers, this area was designated a Natural Area in 1958 as a representative sample of a red fir, Abies magnifica, forest. A survey in 1962 showed the average mature red fir in the forest was 122 years old, 43 meters (140 feet) high, and 0.8 meter (32 inches) in diameter at breast height. In addition to the fir, sugar and Jeffrey pines, Pinus lambertiana and Pinus jeffreyi, are present. Integrity: Over the past 50 years there has been a significant long-term influence in the suppression of natural fires; however, there has been no significant influence from insects, diseases, rodents, game, etc., in the past score or so of years. Use: Research, educational. September 1975
