Laytonville Quarry

Map     Satellite

An unusual variety of minerals has been found in the Franciscan galucophane schists here. Three, deerite, howieite and zussmanite, were discovered in the mid-1960's. Approximately 20 other minerals occur in this quarry.

Rocks exposed in the quarry include both metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rock of the Franciscan formation. There are a number of faults in the region and two are easily observable in the quarry.

Integrity: A quarry worked by the California Division of Highways.
