Map Satellite Within Mendocino Woodlands redwood and mixed evergreen forests are the dominant communities. The Little North Fork of the Big River flows through this area and along its banks is an excellent riparian community with Rhododendron occidentale, Cornus sp., Salix sp., red alders, Alnus rubra, and alluvial flat redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens. There is a freshwater pond and marsh in the woodlands. Animal life is abundant. Introduced beaver, Castor canadensis, are found in the area. Among the birds found here, pileated woodpeckers, Dryocopus pileatus, are of note. There is a variety of amphibians, including Pacific giant salamanders, Dicamptodon ensatus, Northwestern salamanders, Ambystoma gracile, and clouded salamanders, Aneides ferreus. The latter species is near the southern limits of its range here. Integrity: There are various buildings and roads in the area, as it is used both as a recreational area and as a field-trip locality for numerous educational institutions.
