Montgomery Woods State Reserve

Map     Satellite

On an alluvial flat traversed by Montgomery Creek is an excellent stand of virgin redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, covering some 40 hectares (100 acres). It is an open stand with large trees and there is an unusually pure stand of the chain fern, Woodwardia fimbriata, on the forest floor.

A mixed evergreen forest, interspersed with patches of grassland, covers the canyon walls. Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, tan-oak, Lithocarpus densiflora, madrone, Arbutus menziesii, black oak, Quercus kelloggii, and some redwoods are the main elements of the forest. The hybrid Dichelostemma ida-maia X Dichelostemma multiflorum is found in the vicinity.

Integrity: Virtually undisturbed.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
