Map Satellite This area includes the mouth of the Navarro River and its lower reaches to the extent of the tidal influence, approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) upstream. There are several rather extensive mudflats along the river, and a small saltmarsh with pickleweed, Salicornia virginica, the dominant is present near the mouth. An abundance of animal life is found in the area. Ospreys, Pandion haliaetus, and common egrets, Casmerodius albus, are among the birds that nest here. The river otter, Lutra canadensis, has been reported in the area. Several anadromous fish pass through the area on the way to their spawning grounds. Bay pipefish, Syngnathus leptorhynchus, occur here, one of the few populations of the fish in the coastal streams of northern California. Integrity: There are houses on the southern edge of the area and a State beach is nearby. Use: Research, educational, observational, present. December 1977
