Pygmy Forest C

Map     Satellite

Once one of the more extensive Pygmy Forests on the third terrace, substantial portions of it still remain intact. It is particularly noteworthy for the cypress-sphagnum bog that occurs here.

Among the bog plants found in the area are Labrador tea, Ledum glandulosum, wax myrtle, Myrica californica, the rare round-leaved sundew, Drosera rotundifolia, deer fern, Blechnum spicant, sphagnum moss, Sphagnum spp., sedges, Carex spp., salal, Gaultheria shallon, corn lily, Veratrum fimbriatum, creeping St. John's wort, Hypericum anagalloides, and the lily, Lilium maritimum. In this bog the Canadian dogwood, Cornus canadensis, reaches its southern limit on the Pacific Coast.

Integrity: Much of the forest is now subdivided and roads have been put through. The bog has been damaged by falling trees.
