Table Mountain

Map     Satellite

On Table Mountain is a pygmy forest surrounded by a redwood-Douglas fir forest. This pygmy forest (see Pygmy Forests A-U in Mendocino County) is on the fifth marine terrace at some 165 meters (540 feet), the highest that this forest and the redwood forest are found together. At this site the transition belt from the pygmy forest to a normal forest is conspicuous and well preserved. Within a distance of 30 meters (100 feet) or less the dwarf trees give way to equal-age trees of normal size.

The strip offers a uniform, gentle slope that permits searching for the subsurface causes that determine this biotic transition zone.

Integrity: A road passes through a portion of the area but, aside from this, it is in good condition.
