Los Banos Wildlife Area

Centrally located in the portion of the San Joaquin floodplain known as the San Luis Island grasslands, this was the first waterfowl refuge established by the State.

Several plant communities, though disturbed, are present, including remnants of the Central Valley grassland. There are both permanent and temporary freshwater marshes, with Scirpus spp., Typha spp., etc.

Over 200 species of birds have been sighted in the area, including 30 species of waterfowl.

There are a number of mammals present including the beaver, Castor canadensis, and coyote, Canis latrans. The rare giant garter snake, Thamnophis couchi gigas, is found here.

There are numerous shallow lakes and channels with various warm-water fish.

Integrity: The area is managed as a waterfowl habitat.

Use: Research, educational, observational, hunting and fishing.
