McConnell State Recreation Area

Map     Satellite

Though the major portion of this area is heavily developed, that part on the south side of the Merced River is undeveloped and contains a vestigial stand of the Central Valley riparian association. The dominants include cottonwood, Populus fremontii, valley oak, Quercus lobata, and willow, Salix spp., and in the understory, wild grape, Vitis californica.

There is an abundance of animal life in the southern portion, noteworthy being the various raptors, including the red-shouldered hawk, Buteo lineatus.

Integrity: The portion of the area on the north and west side of the river is developed and receives heavy use and is not considered for natural area status. Across the river the area is relatively undisturbed; however, it, too, may be developed for recreational uses.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
