Baker Cypress Research Natural Area

Map     Satellite

This natural area, consisting of two tracts 0.8 kilometers (a half-mile) apart, contains the largest known stand of Baker (Modoc) cypress, Cupressus bakeri. This tree is found only in a few scattered localities from Plumas County to southern Oregon.

Much of the area is rough, broken basaltic lava of recent origin.

Integrity: Grazing in the area is being phased out. The area was designated a natural area but the designation was rescinded pending adequate protection procedures; however, the area remains withdrawn.

Use: Research.
