Cowhead Slough

Map     Satellite

Located in the extreme northeastern corner of the State, Cowhead Slough, which drained the now dry Cowhead Lake, is fed by several intermittent streams and contains water all year around. Vegetation consists primarily of cattail, Typha latifolia.

A number of deep ponds occur in the slough and in a few of the deeper there are the only populations of the Cowhead Lake tui chub which may be an undescribed subspecies of Gila bicolor. Other fish present include a few speckled dace, Rhinichthys osculus, and rainbow trout, Salmo gairdnerii.

Surrounding the slough is an arid, rock-strewn canyon where Great Basin sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, is the dominant shrub.

The slough is a major source of water for the local wildlife.

Integrity: Cowhead Lake, the main water source for the slough, has been drained and water is being diverted from the slough.
