Devil's Garden Natural Area

Map     Satellite

Here, in one of the oldest designated natural areas in the State, is a stand of virgin Western juniper, Juniperus occidentalis. It is a typical stand and has a good representation of age classes. The understory includes basin sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, Penstemon speciosus, bitter brush, Purshia tridentata, and various bunch and annual grasses.

The deep clayey soil is volcanic in origin and there is a large amount of surface rock. This area is a part of The Gardens or The Devil's Garden, an area of some 1,800 square kilometers (700 square miles), which is the largest continuous exposure of the Warner Basalt. The basalt is probably from the Upper Pliocene.

Integrity: The forest is virgin; however, there has been grazing in the area.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
