The Peninsula

Map     Satellite

The Peninsula is an outcrop of volcanic rocks, primarily pyroclastic Tertiary, with three sides quite steep and the fourth sloping to the plain of the Tule Lake Basin. There are also some Quaternary basalts on the lower slopes.

Vegetation on the slopes is primarily sagebrush scrub, with some grassland; it varies in density from none on some of the lava rocks to quite dense.

A number of birds occur here and it is an important raptor nesting area. Among those found are great horned owls, Bubo virginianus, burrowing owl, Speotyto cunicularia, and red-tailed hawks, Buteo jamaicensis.

There are also petroglyphs.

Integrity: Portions have been used for agriculture; however, it is now part of the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the southern end a part of the Lava Beds National Monument.

Use: Research, educational, observational, present. Some private.
