Benton Range Corridor

Map     Satellite

This area is important as a corridor connecting the pinyon pine, Pinus monophylla, and Western juniper, Juniperus occidentalis, woodlands of the Montgomery Pass and adjacent areas in Nevada with the pinyon-juniper woodlands of southern Mono County. Genetic flow of populations associated with these woodlands must pass through this bottleneck.

The Panamint chipmunk, Eutamias panamintinus, is an example of a species restricted to the pinyon-juniper woodland, on its western edge, and its range funnels through this area from north to south.

In addition to the woodland, there is some Great Basin sagebrush scrub.

Geologically, the area consists primarily of Mesozoic granitic rocks, with some Tertiary volcanics.

Integrity: A highway bisects the corridor and there has been some grazing.

Use: Scientific, educational, observational, present.
