Leavitt Meadows

Map     Satellite

Leavitt Meadows lies in an almost level glacial basin some 3 kilometers (2 miles) long and 1 kilometer (0.5 mile) wide, bounded by steep granitic cliffs to the east and west. The West Walker River broadens and meanders through the meadows.

Vegetation includes Juncus spp., Carex spp. and numerous grasses and herbs. Willows, Salix spp., form dense thickets along the river and stream banks. There are some quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides.

The open woodland bordering the meadows is dominated by Jeffrey pine, Pinus jeffreyi, and mountain juniper, Juniperus occidentalis.

Animal life is typical of the mid-Sierra. A substantial population of the yellow-legged frog, Rana boylei, is found here.

Integrity: Much of the meadow is grazed, and portions have been severely overgrazed.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
