White Mountains Scientific Area

Map     Satellite

This is a high-altitude area with an example of arid and semi-arid alpine flora above the tree-line. Among the species found in the area are Trifolium monoense, Carex eleocharis, Koeleria macrantha, Phlox condensata and Eriogonum ovalifolium.

Vegetation on White Mountain Peak is very sparse and includes Anelsonia eurycarpa, Polemonium chartaceum and Erigeron vagus.

Soils are thin and are derived from Mesozoic granitics or metavolcanics.

Integrity: There are two laboratory facilities in the area, one at approximately 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), and the other at about 4,340 meters (14,240 feet). A jeep road and power line connect the two facilities.

Use: Research. Access restricted.
