Asilomar State Beach

Map     Satellite

Nearly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) of shoreline support several habitats. Most of the shore is sandy beach, though there are portions of rocky beach with numerous algae and invertebrates.

Inland there are dunes which give way to a Monterey pine, Pinus radiata, forest. In a portion of the dunes is probably the best remaining example of the dune vegetation that was once prevalent on the Monterey Peninsula. Here are found, among others, the beach poppy, Eschscholzia californica var. maritima, and beach sagewort, Artemisia pycnocephala, the former near the northerly limit of its range; the latter, its southerly. Several rare plants are here or in the vicinity, including Erysimum menziesii, Lupinus tidestromii, Astragalus tener var. titi, and Delphinium hutchinsonae.

Integrity: There are numerous buildings as the area is heavily used as a conference ground. Exotics have been introduced but apparently attempts are now being made to use native plants. There is pressure on all portions of the area, and the best dune vegetation area should be fenced.

Use: Educational, research, observational.
