Del Monte Lake

Map     Satellite

This small lake, lying wholly within the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, is maintained in its "natural" state within the surrounding park. The dominant plants include tule, Scirpus californicus, and the duckweeds Lemna minor and Lemna gibba, as well as some willow, Salix sp. A variety of exotic trees surrounds it in the park.

The lake is used by a number of waterfowl, including mallard, Anas platyrhynchos, Canada geese, Branta canadensis, and ruddy ducks, Oxyura jamaicensis. Western pond turtles, Clemmys marmorata, are found here, as are other reptiles and mammals.

The lake is spring-fed.

Integrity: Though wholly within a park and originally maintained as an added beautification of the old Del Monte Hotel, the lake is a refuge for various animals.

Use: Research, educational, observational, with permission.
