Map Satellite Though at present much of the plant cover of these dunes consists of exotic ice plants, Carpobrotus edulis, Carpobrotus chilensis and Conicosia pugioniformis, there are a number of natives, including Chorizanthe pungens, Lupinus arboreus, Phacelia ramosissima var. montereyensis, Ericameria ericoides, Salvia mellifera, Ambrosia chamissonis, and Lotus scoparius. At least two rare plants occur on the dunes, Erysimum ammophilum and Erysimum teretifolium. The uncommon California legless lizard, Anniella pulchra nigra, is found here. The dunes are of recent origin, deposited after the maximum advance of the Wisconsin glaciation, and are stabilized, though there are occasional blowouts. (See Fort Ord Botanical Reserve). Integrity: The Army uses the area on the inland side of the dunes as a rifle range. There is also an ammunition dump as well as a sewage plant and recreation hall in the area. On the seaward side the beach and dunes are relatively undisturbed. Use: Research, educational. Access restricted. January 1976
