Map     Satellite

The woodland includes California live oak, Quercus agrifolia, valley oak, Quercus lobata, and some digger pine, Pinus sabiniana. Leather oak, Quercus durata, and scrub oak, Quercus berberidifolia, are also found here.

Chaparral includes chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides, toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia, and Fraxinus dipetala. The grassland is primarily exotics.

Two rare plants occur in the area, Lessingia occidentalis and Monardella antonina ssp. benitensis, along with numerous other plants of note including Streptanthus insignis, Chorizanthe ventricosa, Antirrhinum ovatum, Eriogonum argillosum, Eriogonum ordii, Eriogonum covilleanum and Delphinium cardinale. Along Lewis Creek there is an excellent spring wildflower display.

The San Andreas Fault traverses the southwestern slopes of Lewis Creek Canyon and travels just below the crest of Mustang Ridge. Here the Fault is characterized by landslide topography and by zones of thoroughly crushed and gouged rock. There are also a number of sag ponds. Serpentine outcrops are present.

Integrity: There are several roads, ranches and other developments in the area and much of it is grazed; however, the vegetation is in relatively good condition.
