Pacific Grove Monarch Butterfly Trees

Map     Satellite

From mid-October to mid-March swarms of monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus, cluster on a few trees here. There are numerous "butterfly trees" along the Pacific Coast (see Audubon Monarch Grove and Salmon Creek Monarch Butterfly Trees) but these are probably the best known. Swarms will be found on the pines, cypress and eucalyptus in this 0.10 hectare (0.25 acre) site.

During the spring they or their descendants move north as far as southern Canada and return again in the fall. Most of the Danaidae are tropical.

Integrity: The area is in a motel ground and is well advertised. A city ordinance protects the butterflies.

Use: Private. Public admitted.
