Map Satellite A series of granodiorite spires lying 1.2 kilometers (0.75 mile) west of Pescadero Point rises from the floor of Carmel Bay some 36.5 meters (120 feet) to break the water surface at low tide. These spires have been carved by the water and have almost vertical and occasionally undercut sides. Faunal and floral zonation of the sublittoral is typical of the open coast. It is condensed on a vertical scale here so that the zones can be studied in proximity to one another. This site is the northernmost limit of the blue hydrocoral, Allopora californica, which is rare north of Santa Catalina Island. Integrity: Due to relative inaccessibility, diving pressures have been light; however, the site is becoming increasingly popular and thus the very fragile communities could be endangered. Use: Educational, research, observation. July 1975
