Salmon Creek Monarch Butterfly Trees

Map     Satellite

Swarms of monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus, over-winter on the eucalyptus and cypress here. They arrive in mid-October and leave in mid-March. (See Pacific Grove).

This area is primarily chaparral and coastal strand with only a few trees. The wishbone bush, Mirabilis californica, and Gilia achilleifolia ssp. multicaulis are noteworthy plants in the area.

Sea otters, Enhydra lutris, are frequently observed offshore.

Integrity: The area includes a residence and associated buildings. One of the few non-public butterfly wintering areas, it should remain undisturbed.

Use: Private
