Cedar Roughs

Map     Satellite

The cypress found here is Sargent cypress, Cupressus sargentii, and it occurs in remarkably pure stands, many of them several hectares in extent. These stands are frequently of brushy, small trees forming almost impassable thickets. On some of the slopes and along the creeks are larger trees, though none comparable in size to those found further north. Aerial photographs reveal the fire history of the area.

It is interesting to note that this stand is one of the more southerly of the "northern" population of the tree, there being disjunct stands on Mount Tamalpais and Cedar Mountain. There is a gap between these and the stands which are found again in southern Monterey County and to the south.

Aside from the cypress, there is a relatively impoverished flora. The area is on serpentine, with enstatite outcrops, and is quite rugged.

Integrity: Virtually undisturbed though there has been some grazing on the slopes.

Use: Research, educational, light recreational.
