Map Satellite Las Posadas State Forest contains a mosaic of plant communities including disturbed grasslands, yellow pine and redwood forests. There is a high concentration of native conifers here which includes the incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens, knobcone pine, Pinus attenuata, sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, ponderosa (yellow) pine, Pinus ponderosa, gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Western yew, Taxus brevifolia, and the California nutmeg, Torreya californica. The rare Hesperolinon bicarpellatum occurs in the forest, as may the rare Perideridia gairdneri ssp. gairdneri which has been reported nearby. Animal life is abundant in the forest and there is a population of the ornate shrew, Sorex ornatus, found here. There are good exposures of several geological formations including Jurassic sediments, Cretaceous marine sediments, Sonoma volcanics and the Knoxville formation. Some ultramafic serpentine is also found here. Integrity: There is some development in the area but portions are virtually undisturbed. Use: Educational, research, observational, light recreational.
