Northern Napa County Cypress Forest

Map     Satellite

Though there are a number of areas in the northern portion of the State where MacNab and Sargent cypress, Cupressus macnabiana and Cupressus sargentii, occur together, this is probably the finest mixed stand. It is also the only stand known where hybridization between the two species is occurring.

The cypress occur on the serpentine soils in the area. There is also a streambank association of plants on the serpentine, including the rare Mimulus nudatus. Other rare plants in the area include Hesperolinon drymarioides and Arabis modesta. The latter is known from only a few localities, one further south in Napa County, in the Seiad Valley in Siskiyou County some 340 kilometers (210 miles) to the north, and from one area in Southern Oregon.

Integrity: There is a jeep trail in the area. Consideration is being given to vegetation conversion schemes in the vicinity.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
