Yountville Oaks

Map     Satellite

Lying between the Napa River and Coon Creek is this excellent stand of valley oak, Quercus lobata, which is a remnant of the stands that once covered much of the floor of the Napa Valley and some of the other valleys in the Coast Ranges. This oak was also a conspicuous member of the riparian association of the Sacramento Valley. While the oak is frequently found on the Quaternary alluvial soils in these valleys, it is not confined to valley floors and is a member of several upland communities.

This grove is one of the larger still extant in the north Bay valleys. A few of the larger trees are probably well over 200 years of age.

The area is also known as the Founder's Grove, as it was the meeting place of the first Seventh Day Adventists who came into the Valley a century ago.

Integrity: Though there has been some clearing and the surrounding area is diked or in agricultural use, the grove is relatively undisturbed.
