Map Satellite During much of the year the area is open, rocky flats surrounded by chaparral and woodland. The woodland includes elements of both the foothill woodland and ponderosa pine forest communities, with the dominant trees being ponderosa and gray pines, Pinus ponderosa and Pinus sabiniana, and California black and interior live oaks, Quercus kelloggii and Quercus wislizenii. Principal shrubs in the chaparral include whiteleaf manzanita, Arctostaphylos viscida, coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica ssp. tomentella, redberry, Rhamnus crocea ssp. ilicifolia, Quercus wislizeniivar. frutescens, and Sierra plum, Prunus subcordata. During the spring and summer months of an average to good year the area features a succession of plants that provide sheets of color. Many of the plants are unusual to rare in the County. Plants of interest include Eriogonum prattenianum, Allium sanbornii, Polygonum californicum, and Polygonum parryi, among others. Nearly 100 other species have been recorded from this area.
