Heisler Park Ecological Reserve

Map     Satellite

For descriptive material see Laguna Beach (North).

Within this Reserve, which includes the easterly portion of the Laguna Beach Marine Life Refuge, roughly the area lying up to 215 meters (700 feet) to sea off Heisler Park, it is prohibited to take any fish, invertebrate, plant, or geological formation.  Swimming and bathing are permitted, as is boating.

In mid-1975 some 14,000 baby abalones were planted on more than 500 large concrete bricks in three habitat areas in the Reserve.  The abalones ranged in size from 1.2 centimeters (0.5 inch) to 2.5 centimeters (1 inch).  The different sizes were planted in each of three habitat areas to provide growth and survival information for future seeding operations.  It is expected that they will be of spawning size within two to three years.
