San Joaquin Hills Area

Map     Satellite

All or parts of the watersheds of Los Trancos, Muddy, Moro and Emerald Canyons are included in this area where several plant communities are present.

Much of the area is covered by a good representative example of the coastal sage scrub community, with such species as black sage, Salvia mellifera, white sage, Salvia apiana, California sagebrush, Artemisia californica, and California buckwheat, Eriogonum fasciculatum.  Some Yucca whipplei is present.

In the canyons there are oak woodlands, with coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia.  Another oak, possibly a hybrid of scrub oak, Quercus sp. and Quercus lobata, is found here.

There are also grasslands with exotics, particularly on the lower portions of the area.

Animal life is typical of the south coastal region.

Most of the area is underlain by marine sedimentaries of the mid-Miocene, though there are traces of a Pleistocene marine terrace in the lower elevations. A number of faults occur in the hills here.

Integrity:  The area has been grazed and there are some recreational facilities.  The coastal sage scrub is, for the most part, in excellent condition.  Portions were burned in 1979.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, present, on public portions.  Some private.
