Map Satellite While heavily populated, this canyon still supports some riparian vegetation and a Southern oak woodland. Most of the hillsides are covered with chaparral, with Coulter pine, Pinus coulteri, on the northern flanks. Within the canyon is the type locality for the Holz shale, siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate, members of the Ladd formation dating to the upper Cretaceous. It is rich in marine shallow-water fossils such as Trigonarca excavata, Trigonarca californica, Schloenbachia knighteni and Schloenbachia siskiyouensis. Integrity: The area is heavily populated, and the fossil beds have been partially excavated. Use: Private March 1977
