Soquel Canyon

Map     Satellite

Soquel Canyon is one of the least disturbed areas in the Chino Hills. Much of the area is covered by an oak woodland, with coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, the dominant in the overstory. Engelmann oak, Quercus engelmannii, is also present. The woodland intergrades with grasslands, primarily exotics, and chaparral in portions of the area.

A frequently perennial stream flows through the steep-sided canyon. Near the mouth there are sycamore, Platanus racemosa, and cottonwood, Populus fremontii.

Among the numerous animals that inhabit the area are such species as warbling vireo, Vireo gilvus, house finch, Carpodacus mexicanus, and mule deer, Odocoileus hemionus. The latter are particularly abundant here.

Rock formations in the area are primarily of upper Miocene marine origin. The Whittier Fault passes through a portion of the canyon.

Integrity: There are several dirt roads in the area including an access road to a lookout station. Portions of the area have been burned in the past decade; however, in much of the deeper part of the canyon the vegetation is virtually undisturbed.
