Dotons Point

Map     Satellite

Lying entirely within the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, this Point is subject to heavy use. However, away from the beach and picnic areas there is a lush oak woodland which supports an unusually heavy concentration of birds.

Vegetation in the woodland includes interior live and blue oak, Quercus wislizenii and Quercus douglasii, gray pine, Pinus sabiniana, California buckeye, Aesculus californica, buck brush, Ceanothus cuneatus, coyote bush, Baccharis pilularis, and yerba santa, Eriodictyon californicum.

Over a hundred species of birds have been recorded in the area, with many nesting. Of note are the Lewis woodpecker, Asyndesmus lewis, black-chinned hummingbird, Archilochus alexandri, and the increasing numbers of Canada geese, Branta canadensis, that are wintering on the lake.

Integrity: The area is bordered by a beach and a heavily used picnic area. There is a road through the area. Indiscriminate use of the area may have an adverse effect on the breeding populations.

Use: Educational, observational.
