Indian Canyons Palm Groves

MAP     Satellite

Located on the steep eastern escarpment of Mount San Jacinto, these three canyons, Palm, Murray and Andreas, which along with Tahquitz are collectively known as the Indian Canyons, support stands of the California fan palm, Washingtonia filifera.  (See Indio Hills Palm Oases). The best known and the largest in the United States is that Palm Canyon grove which numbers some 3,000 trees and which extends for several kilometers along the floor and sides of the canyon.  The lush groves stand in marked contrast to the sparsely covered rocky canyon walls.

As a result of the water, there is a rich fauna in the canyons. The desert bighorn, Ovis canadensis, is found in the upper reaches.

Cut through thick beds of sedimentary and intrusive rocks of pre-Cenozoic age, the canyons are generally rather deep and narrow and separated by sharp ridges.  Water is abundant during the winter and spring, decreasing during the dry months.  The streams disappear in the alluvial fan.  In Andreas Canyon there is a picturesque waterfall.

Integrity:  Trails and roads penetrate the area, but much of it is relatively undisturbed.

Use:  Educational, research, light recreation.
