Map Satellite This area lies in the southern end of the Rice Valley. On the hillsides and alluvial slopes the vegetation is a creosote bush scrub, with Larrea tridentata and burro-weed, Ambrosia dumosa, the dominants. Other species found in the scrub include thorn-apple, Datura discolor, incienso, Encelia farinosa, waterjacket, Lycium andersonii, and Hymenoclea salsola. In the washes and drainage areas there are dense woodlands of ironwood, Olneya tesota. These thickets are among the densest in the State. A variety of animals is found here including the kit fox, Vulpes macrotis, gray shrew, Notiosorex crawfordi, pallid bat, Antrozous pallidus, black-throated sparrow, Amphispiza bilineata, and prairie falcon, Falco mexicanus. Integrity: Grazing and off-road-vehicle damage have resulted in the depletion of the vegetation and compaction of soil in portions. Use: Research, educational, observational. Some private. May 1982
