Map     Satellite

Lower Sherman Island lies at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. Most of the area is a freshwater marsh, with open water ponds within the marsh and separating portions of the island.

Vegetation consists primarily of cattails, Typha spp., and tules, Scirpus spp. On higher ground there are willows, Salix sp., and some grassland. The rare Lilaeopsis masonii is found here.

A number of migratory waterfowl feed and rest in the area. They include mallards, Anas platyrhynchos, baldpate, Anas americana, green-winged teal, Anas crecca, canvasback, Aythya valisineria, Canada geese, Branta canadensis, white-fronted goose, Anser albifrons, and whistling swans, Dior columbianus. The rare Suisun song sparrow, Melospiza melodia maxillaris, may occur here (see Browns and Winter Islands).

Integrity: The downstream edges are leveed and there are some navigational aids present.
