Big Bear Lake

MAP     Satellite

This area to the north of Big Bear Lake lies in a primarily yellow pine forest, and is the center for a number of endemic species in the San Bernardino Mountains.  Many of these are variants of more common taxa in the Sierra Nevada and other California mountains.  Three rare species occur here, Taraxacum californicum, Lesquerella kingii ssp. bernardina, and Phlox dolichantha.

Integrity:  The development of summer housing on both the private and federal land in the area, particularly close to the lake, has altered the status of the endemic flora.  The impact of this is unknown.  Portions remain relatively undisturbed.

Use:  The undisturbed yellow pine forest areas should be completely surveyed to determine what remains and the protective steps necessary.
