Bigelow Cholla Natural Area

MAP     Satellite

Bisected by Interstate Highway 40, this is the site of one of the more outstanding stands of the jumping or ball cholla, Opuntia bigelovii. Amidst a typical creosote bush scrub community, large and almost pure stands of the Opuntia occur.

The area lies on a gently sloping Quaternary alluvial plain, on the west side of the Sacramento Mountains.

Integrity:  Save for the highway, the area is virtually undisturbed.

Use:  Educational, research, observational.
