Cascade Canyon
Map SatelliteCascade Canyon abuts the Cucamonga Wilderness on the west. Chaparral covers over three-quarters of the area; scrub oak, Quercus berberidifolia, Arctostaphylos spp., and chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, are among the species present.
In the higher elevation there is a pine forest with ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, Coulter pine, Pinus coulteri, and incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens. Some riparian woodland occurs along the canyon bottom, with big-leaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, conspicuous.
Animal life is typical and relatively abundant. Bighorn sheep, Ovis canadensis, have been sighted in the area.
Several rock formations are present, primarily the Precambrian San Gabriel complex. There is some Paleozoic limestone. Corundum and lazurite occur here. An all-year stream flows in the canyon.
Integrity: Portions have been burned and a reforestation project is underway.
Use: Research, educational, observational.
