Castle Buttes and Mountains

MAP     Satellite

These areas, separated by high desert valley, present a spectacular display of deeply sculptured Tertiary volcanics.  These volcanics rest on gneiss, schist and granites of relatively early Pre-Cambrian age that are among the oldest in the State and which are exposed in portions of this region.

Vegetation is Mojave desert creosote bush scrub, with a pinyon-juniper forest in the higher reaches.

There are sites of archaeological interest here.

Integrity:  Virtually undisturbed.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, light recreational.  Remainder private.
