Coxcomb Mountains

MAP     Satellite

Though much of this rugged, desert mountain range lies within the Joshua Tree National Park, a portion to the east and south does not.

The mountains consist of Coxcomb granodiorite, dating from the Mesozoic, which is exposed in most sections, save the southern end where there are pre-Cretaceous metasedimentaries.  There are also some Pleistocene nonmarine sedimentaries at the bass of the mountains, particularly in the south.

Vegetation is similar to that of the National Park, with creosote bush scrub the dominant and with pinyon pine, Pinus monophylla, on the higher peaks.

The desert bighorn, Ovis canadensis, is found here.

Integrity:  Virtually undisturbed, though there are some jeep trails and the Colorado River Aqueduct flows through a tunnel through the mountains.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, Some private.
